Walking around San Diego Comic Con I remember my mom told me that she didn’t notice that many people cosplaying. I agree with her, there actually weren’t that many cosplayers at SDCC.

This may have only been my second time at San Diego Comic Con, but honestly from what I’ve seen the cosplayer ratio is about 1 out of 4 to 1 out of 5 people. Other conventions I’ve been to like LA Comic Con, WonderCon, C2E2, and New York Comic Con and it’s about a 40 maybe 50% split between cosplayers and non-cosplayers. Even a really small convention like Long Beach Comic Con is able to maintain that even split. Then there’s an event like Anime Expo where you’re seeing about 4 out of 5 people dressed up as something, but in my opinion anime conventions are way different than comic book conventions, attracting a completely different segment of nerds. I could go on and on with the difference between anime and comic book nerds but I’ll save that for another day.

I think the reason why there weren’t that many cosplayers at San Diego Comic Con is because of how big it’s gotten so big and so mainstream, covering so many topics and genres outside of comic books that they’ve attracted so many casual fans, fans who aren’t into cosplaying or dressing up for a convention. Since there are only so many tickets for SDCC all these casual fans are pushing out a huge number of people who are willing to dress up for a convention.

There is a plus side to having much fewer cosplayers at San Diego Comic Con and that is that you really see a lot of high-quality workmanship in the costumes. Like I said, all those casual fans pushing are pushing out the more casual cosplayers, people who usually just go out and buy a costume or just don’t put that much effort into a costume. This just leaves the more diehard attendees, people who will dress up for a convention and will go all out in their costumes because they are that into conventions and they just love it so much.

Despite the ratio of cosplayers to non cosplayers I still managed to take a lot of photos so be prepared for 2 more posts on cosplayers after this and don’t forget that I still have a lot of other content on San Diego Comic Con 2019 to go through.

The first person I decided to get a picture on was this woman dressed as 7 of 9 from Star Trek: Voyager. This is actually the first time I saw a person cosplaying as 7 of 9. In the past I’ve seen people dressed as other Star Trek aliens and I’ve also seen people wear Starfleet uniforms circa Star Trek: TNG as well as the movies starring the original cast but I’ve never seen a 7 of 9.

Seeing this woman it reminds me of this thing I saw on Cracked.com about how Jeri Ryan used to be married to Republican political candidate, Jack Ryan and that it got out that they divorced because he was trying to get her to join some kinky sex clubs. They say that when this got out it caused Ryan’s ex-husband to withdraw his candidacy for the Illinois State Senate paving the way for Barack Obama to win It and eventually become President of the United States.

Super Saiyan Blue AKA Super Saiayn God Super Saiyan Son Goku and Vegeta which first debuted in Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection F. I like how they went the effort of making their hair actually look like the anime/manga rather than just dying their real hair and styling it with gel.

A steampunk /Comic Con 50th anniversary-inspired Darth Vader.

Grunkle Stan from Gravity Falls. Seeing so many Gravity Falls cosplayers at conventions lately it amazes me how much of an impact Gravity Falls had on people despite being such a short-lived series. I wonder if Disney will bring it back when they launch their Disney+ service.

Street Fighter family cosplay. You have Dad as Ryu, Mom as Chun Li, daughter as Sakura Kasugano. I’m guessing the son is supposed to be Ken Masters but Ken doesn’t have dragons on his gi or wear a headband.

Darth Vader from Star Wars. This looks like a store-bought costume but it looks like one of the better ones since it got all the details down with all the buttons and lights on the chest piece and belt.

Nerd Hulk. Not sure if this was inspired from Avengers: Endgame or one of the comic book incarnations. For those who don’t know, Nerd Hulk is a version of the Hulk where Bruce Banner manages to maintain control even in Hulk form while in the Ultimates Universe Nerd Hulk is actually a genetically-altered clone of the Hulk.

Comicbook versions of Deadpool and Domino.

Heath Ledger-inspired Joker. I really like how he got Nike sneakers in the same shade of purple as his suit.

I thought this Indiana Jones being chased by the giant boulder cosplay by a guy and his kid was kind of cute. I do wish they did a better job at making the boulder more round because it just looks like he’s being chased by a poop emoji.

I’m not 100% sure what these girls are supposed to be. Girl on the left looks to be a Frankenstein’s monster while girl on the right looks like a sea monster or maybe a Cthulhu-like creature. Between that and the sign I’m assuming they’re supposed to be cosplaying as Monster High characters.

Here’s a girl dressed as a Twi’lek from Star Wars. When I first met her I caught her chilling on the floor. She offered to pose for me but I said I preferred if she was just chilling there on the floor pretending I wasn’t there because I wanted a casual photo in attempt to be more artsy or seem more human. I feel I failed at it.

This is at least the second time I ran into somebody in a costume like this but I can’t figure out who they’re supposed to be. Maybe next time I see one I’ll ask them where this is from.

A Desert Stormtrooper AKA a Sandtrooper. You can tell he’s a Sandtrooper because of the orange pauldron which honestly and I looked this up it really has no function whatsoever. I’m guessing they just put it on them to distinguish them from regular Stromtroopers. Really good job putting some weathering on his armor, it’s a small but really good detail.

Maui from Disney’s Moana. Big props to this guy for getting all the tattoos done.

Here’s a guy dressed as Kevin Smith. I remember when I bumped into this guy I thought “How crazy would it be if I bumped into the real Kevin Smith.” Unfortunately I never got the chance to see the real Kevin Smith, but that would have been awesome if I did.

Here’s a guy cosplaying not as a character Mark Hamill plays but as Mark Hamill himself. Later on I found out the real Mark Hamill was walking around the Comic Con floor. Unfortunately I never got to see him. I only found out he was there because a friend of mine posted a video on Facebook of them being part of a crowd surrounding him.

Here’s a Wonder Woman. I’m trying to figure out where the blue jacket is from. I know I saw it somewhere I just can’t think of where.

Here’s a Jubilee based on how she looked in the ’90s X-Men cartoon.

Two version of Starfire from Teen Titans.

Dick Tracy and Breathless Mahoney. Seeing these two I’m wondering why Hollywood hasn’t made a sequel or tried rebooting Dick Tracy yet. Supposedly the 1990 movie with Warren Beatty was a huge success but because Disney spent so much to produce, market, and promote the movie they still lost money which is why they weren’t interested in making a sequel. According to what I’ve read online Warren Beatty actually owns the rights to Dick Tracy and he’s been shopping it around for years trying to get a sequel made but so far nobody is willing to help him. Although back in 2016 Beatty mentioned that he’s still up for a sequel so maybe there’s hope that Dick Tracy will make a comeback some how.

Here’s a large group of Star Wars Cosplayers I ran into.

Here’s a unique take on Bowser form Super Mario Brothers. The clawed fingers were a good touch and I really like the Chain Chomp flail.

Daenerys Targaryen from the early seasons of Game of Thrones.

Here’s a clever Rick and Morty group cosplay. Birdperson is pretty obvious but on the left you also have Tinkles , Summer’s flying magic ballerina lamb friend who turned out to be an alien parasite, and in the middle you have Tophat Jones the breakfast cereal mascot based on Lucky Charms mascot Lucky the Leprechaun. Good touch with Tophat Jones having the exposed guts considering his character is quickly cut open and killed by kids who want his cereal.

A Jawa from Star Wars. I should really consider doing video at conventions because on top of having the look down this guy was also making Jawa noises.

Alana and Marko from my favorite comicbook series: Saga. Notice how they have a stuffed Ghus filling in for baby Hazel.

Kyoshi Warriors from Avatar: The Last Airbender. Notice how the male Kyoshi Warrior is rocking a man bun. This is an obvious reference to the episode where Sokka becomes humbled when Suki makes him dress as a Kyoshi Warrior complete with the makeup. These are pretty good costumes but it really bugs me how they made them yellow instead of green.

Linda Belcher from Bob’s Burgers rocking the Spice Rack.

A female knight from Fortnite. I’m not sure if she is a cosplayer or a booth model hired to just stand there.

A group of Alice in Wonderland cosplayers inspired by the Tim Burton movies.

Gene and Louise Belcher. Good touch with the burger costume and Kuchi Kopi.

Black Widow with the high tech escrima sticks.

Batman’s rogues gallery. From left to right you have Joker, Deathstroke, Black Mask, Cheshire. I’m not 100% sure who that guy in the background is supposed to be unfortunately, but the rest of the people are Bane, Hush, Red Hood.

Lightning from Final Fantasy XIII.

A really good Catwoman. I’m really regretting not doing a better job with these photos. I should have asked her to step into the shadow or the light so I could get more consistent lighting.

This tired little guy is a member of the Marvel Family, or as it’s known now, the Shazam Family.

Daredevil wearing the improvised ninja outfit from season 3 of the Netflix series that he had to wear after Bullseye started impersonating him. This was a really good series and I was really bummed when Netflix killed it. I’m really hoping Disney+ brings it back. Good touch with the ropes wrapped around his wrists and fists.

I caught this guy chilling outside when I was on my way to the Hilton to try to get into a panel. I’m not sure what he was but I thought he looked cool.

Dr. Grant and Dr. Sattler from Jurassic Park. I’ve been seeing a lot of these at conventions lately. I’m really wondering what is causing the revival in Jurassic Park cosplayers especially these two.

Nico Minoru, Molly Hayes Hernandez, and Gert Yorkes from the Hulu Runaways series.

Ruby Roundhouse from Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and the upcoming Jumanji: The Next Level.

Misty and Brock from Pokemon.

Good timing catching this kid dressed as a Colonial Marine next to this Alien/Xenomorph statue. He did a really good job with his pulse rifle as well as all the tiny custom details he added to the rifle and bodyarmor.

Psylocke from X-Men.

Disney Princesses Moana, Jasmine and Ariel.

Marty McFly from the first Back to the Future film. Good touch with the Walkman, as well as the hairpiece.

The T-1000 from Terminator 2: Judgement Day in the motorcycle cop uniform complete with the helmet. Seeing this guy it reminded me of one of the action figures they had when I was a kid of the T-1000 as a motorcycle cop with a helmet.

Comicbook version of Dr. Strange.

Solid Snake from Metal Gear Solid with his favorite accessory of all time: the box.

Alice from the American McGee Alice videogames.

Mayor HR Pufnstuf from the children’s TV series of the same name. I don’t quite get why HR Pufnstuf is supposed to be a dragon. He doesn’t look like a traditional dragon. In fact, when I first saw this guy I thought he was like some twisted muppet thing from Fraggle Rock.

A Wesley Snipes Blade. Man, when I found out that Marvel announced a reboot of Blade starring Mahershala Ali I was super stoked.

While I was wandering around I saw this guy on stilts. After taking a second look and seeing him being followed by a helper I realized this dude is going to do a Hulkbuster from 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron.

I’m curious if this is the same guy I saw at LA Comic Con a few years ago. This guy was such a huge hit drawing so many people to take pictures with him. Unfortunately he also seems to be a ghost because nobody has been able to find him on social media.

Groot from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 in the Ravager uniform.

Emma Frost and a Avengers: Endgame Captain America.

Here’s a clever Legend of Zelda group cosplay from this family. You have the Sword-Giving Old Man, the Potion-selling Old Woman from the original Legend of Zelda game and Princess Zelda and Link from Breath of the Wild.

I’m going to finish this post with these Day of the Dead looking people. I’m not sure where their costumes are from. I’m pretty sure they’re not from Coco or Book of Life. I guess these people are just really into the Day of the Dead.

Thanks for checking this out and don’t forget to check back for more stuff from San Diego Comic Con 2019.
