Looking back at the cartoons I grew up with in the ’90s I realize that they were more or less glorified half hour toy commercials. While today pretty much every cartoon has a few apps or mobile/online games, every cartoon in the ’90s had its own toyline which depending on how successful the show was they could be pretty extensive and include multiple variations of the same characters as well as vehicles and other kinds of playsets. Hell, when I was a kid I had so many Real Ghostbusters action figures as well as like 3 or 4 different versions of each Ninja Turtle.

Speaking of the Turtles, Youtube video guys Sneaky Zebra have created a fake toy commercial in the vein of a ’90s toy commercial based on probably the greatest episode of one of the greatest shows on television. I am talking about the Pickle Rick episode of Rick and Morty.

For those of you who haven’t seen the Pickle Rick episode the gist of it is that in order to get out of family therapy Rick turns himself into a pickle. After accidentally getting washed into the sewers Rick mutilates a few rats and cockroaches in order to build himself this crazy Frankenstein-esque rat/pickle body at which point he just goes ape shit on a bunch of rats before going through the sewers and ending up in  a foreign country’s embassy or something and then slaughtering the embassy’s entire security staff while still in pickle form.

Anyway, this toy commercial does a good job of recreating the tone of a ’90s toy commercial. I’m not just talking about the quality of the toys but basically everything in the commercial.

You have a bunch of rat figures who serve as the goon/thug/cannon fodder archetype figures which honestly looking back who would honestly have this many of goon/thug figures? I mean, even if you were that rich growing up who would want them? They were usually pretty lame and only good for being the guys your good guy figures would beat up or melting in the microwave.

You have Ratchula, the bad guy leader, who sets himself apart from the other bad guys by not only being bigger than the other bad guys but also has the added feature of spring loaded wings.

Then you have our hero, Pickle Rick who is introduced bursting through a wall made of blocks or some other stackable items which you can never find in stores anywhere.

Seriously where the hell do you get these blocks? I always wanted some for my toys.

When the action starts you have Pickle Rick doing his thing against the bad guys including using a toy version of a Rube Goldberg machine which like stuff you couldn’t really buy in stores but honestly looking back now I could put this together with random stuff you have around your house.

Pickle Rick as the hero figure is supposed to be way more cooler than any of the bad guy figures and thus he comes with way more accessories.

You have his screw gauntlets.

His pickle brine slime.

And also his shoulder-mounted laser thing which in toy form is a spring-loaded missile launcher.

Out of the entire commercial I think 1 of the more better touches was the “Figures and accessories sold separately” disclaimer at the end. Which honestly I’m pretty sure they still show in toy commercials today but it was always a phrase that rang in my head after watching toy commercials when I was a kid.

Anyway check out the commercial to see how awesome it is.

While you’re at it check out the part where Rick builds his crazy pickle/rat body using a crazy Rube Goldberg machine he made out of garbage before he starts slaughtering rats.

Also check out Pickle Rick going crazy on a bunch of human guys before getting into a crazy action fight sequence with Jaguar who is voiced by Danny Trejo.
