I want to say that the Cosplayers of WonderCon 2019 had two things going on for them. I mentioned in my last post that there was a lot of great quality costumes, but I also want to say that there was a lot of originality.

I saw a lot of people dressed as characters you never would have imagined people wanting to cosplay as. A lot of characters from old and obscure properties as well as a lot of characters who are just straight up not very popular. I also saw a lot of unique takes and twists on characters.

To be honest, I’m not all that into people who add a unique twist or take on their characters. It’s not that I’m a purist snob or anything, it’s just that I feel that a unique twist adds a level of difficulty of making it work and not everybody can handle that added difficulty.

Looking back at my photos from this batch, I’m really disappointed in myself because of all the amateur mistakes I found in some of them. I think a huge chunk of the reason I made these mistakes and didn’t catch them the first time was because I was too focused on making up for all that time I lost parking and I was just rushing myself to get as many photos as possible. I really need to remember to take my time and focus on quality. Honestly, at a convention it doesn’t take me that much time to pause and get a good photo out of people.

I tried to filter out all of my crappier photos out although there are a few where I caught somebody blinking. Unfortunately, it was either that or nothing so please bear with me and enjoy the rest of my photos of the cosplayers of WonderCon 2019.

Judging by the red hair and the green and purple color scheme I’m assuming this girl is supposed to be a steampunk version of Ariel from Disney’s Little Mermaid.

Ghus my favorite character from one of my favorite comicbook series, Saga. If you haven’t read it I highly recommend it. A lot of critics call it Game of Thrones in space and I agree with them. It has really good character development and really good storylines. I really like how she made sure to include Ghus’s chopper which is what he calls his axe.

A female version of Thor with what looks like a store-bought version of Stormbreaker, the axe he had created to replaced his destroyed hammer, Mjolnir. Her Thor costume is just a mismatch of different eras, you have the eye patch and costume which puts this at Thor: Ragnarok, and then there’s Stormbreaker which is from Avengers: Infinity War. I’m curious if she did this out of artistic license or if she just didn’t know any better.

For those who don’t read comicbooks, Stormbreaker’s comicbook origin is really different than the Marvel Cinematic Universe origin. In the comics Stormbreaker actually belongs to Beta Ray Bill, an alien warrior and hero who due to a misunderstanding battled and defeated Thor before proving himself worthy enough to lift Mjolnir. When Odin found out about this he had the dwarves who created Mjolnir create Stormbreaker for Bill so that he may have a weapon of his own to continue his mission and protect his people.

Android 18 from Dragonball Z. This girl really nailed the look with the denim miniskirt and vest, and the striped shirt and leggings. Also the look in her eyes, it’s like she is a cold, calculating robot.

Yondu Udonta from Guardians of the Galaxy complete with his Yaka arrow and looking like he’s about to whistle that thing through my heart.

This is a first for me, it’s Afro Samurai from the anime/manga of the same name.

Here’s a large group doing a Justice League thing. I feel a little bad because when I asked them to stop for a picture other people stopped and started taking their own pics making it so they couldn’t leave.

Guy Fieri looking like he just came from Flavortown.

Cloud Strife from Final Fantasy VII. Although judging by his costume and buster sword I’m thinking this is Cloud from the Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children movie.

Wonder Woman villain, Cheetah. Even though in the comicbooks Cheetah is a woman and is set to be played by Kristen Wiig in Wonder Woman 1984 you can clearly see that this Cheetah is actually a dude. This is actually one of the few times I’m glad they went with a bodysuit rather than painting their body.

I remember seeing this guy dressed as WWE’s Undertaker at WonderCon 2018 and I’m also pretty sure I saw him walking around LA Comic Con too. I probably should have skipped him since I already had a picture of him from last year but what really caught my eye and made me want a picture of him again was that he was posing with another guy dressed as Ed from Goodburger a character made famous by Kenan Thompson’s old partner, Kel Mitchell back when they were on All That on Nickelodeon. This is a photo I unfortunately want use as an example of my laziness and carelessness when I was getting photos. I really should have gotten individual photos of these two, but I thought it would be funny to get both of them. Unfortunately, I was rushing myself so I took a photo that I’m not too particularly proud of.

Princess Kida from Disney’s Atlantis: The Lost Empire.

A female version of Ghostrider complete with the chains. I really like how she committed herself enough to paint her body rather than just go with a bodysuit.

A Zatanna Zatara. Zatanna is supposed to be featured in Justice League Dark, an upcoming DCEU movie that is supposedly in development and based on the comic series of the same name. Seeing a Zatanna here I’m wondering if DC will also consider giving her a series on the DC Universe VOD service or at least introduce her into the Arrowverse.

Rick Morty and Beth. At first I thought Beth was Summer but then I noticed the box of wine she was using as a purse and I thought, “Why would Summer have a box of wine?” Then I realized, “Oh she’s Beth because Beth’s an alcoholic.”

Here are some Disney movie villains. From left to right we have Jafar from Aladdin, Hades from Hercules, Ursula from Little Mermaid, Queen Grimhilde/The Evil Queen from Snow White, Cruella de Vil from 101 Dalmations, and Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty.

A Night King from Game of Thrones I really like how he made sure to get the details on the arms and hands rather than just have them as solid blue.

Bishop from X-Men. Like Thor from a few pictures ago this Bishop is a mix of different eras. He’s wearing the XSE uniform that Bishop wore when he was introduced in Uncanny X-Men (1st series) issue 282 and wore in the ’90s X-Men cartoon on Fox but he has a shaved head which Bishop didn’t have until X-Men (2nd series) issue 46.

A Batman from Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice. This guy did a really good job replicating the look of the armor. I also really like how he added lights in the eye pieces.

Black Widow from the MCU and Wonder Woman from the DCEU. This is another picture I’m not proud of because I caught them blinking.

Colonial Marines from the Aliens franchise with a scientist with a facehugger in a jar. Cool costumes but another messed up image. I really should have backed to get them all in frame. I also should have noticed that their Vasquez character blinked as well. They did a really good job adding all the subtle details and customizations to their body armor. The details on their weapons is also really well done. I’m curious why they painted the tips of the pulse rifles orange like they’re airsoft guns. I’m thinking they either bought them online like that or they just did it to emphasize to the costume checkers that their weapons are fake.

Solomon Grundy, a very old yet pretty obscure DC character. I think the problem with Solmon Grundy is that he’s too much of a two-dimensional character which is why he’s not used that much in media. He’s super strong and super durable but he’s basically a mindless zombie. He’s essentially just a glorified henchman. He does have a tragic origin but even with that I can see it being easy to use him as a major character in things.

Some Harry Potter cosplayers. You have Albus Dumbledore, Pomona Sprout the Herbology teacher, and Bellatrix Lestrange.

Wookie/Mandalore mashup. I’m a sucker for people on stilts which is why I got a picture of this guy. He was freaking tall, like at least 7 foot tall. Stilts plus a costume which I’m sure is really hot and possibly hard to see in. This is commitment right here.

I thought I knew what this girl was when I took her picture but I can’t remember what she is supposed to be.

Same thing with this guy in a tiger costume. I was thinking he was from Zootopia at first but now I don’t know where he’s from. i think he might be Whiskers, the animated cat from Last Action Hero.

Batman villain Mr. Freeze. I really wish I caught this guy earlier for pictures so you could see how awesome his costume was but at the time he was being swarmed by other people so I thought I would catch him later. He had a fishbowl helmet as part of his costume but he took it off to take a break and I didn’t want to be a dick and ask him to put it back on. He was also with this huge group of people and I really wish I got a picture of him with his group because they all had some great costumes. Like I said mistake on my part for not getting the photos earlier but I didn’t want somebody getting in my shot and at this point I was more concerned with not looking like a demanding asshole.

Silver Samurai from the 2013 Wolverine movie with Hugh Jackman. In the comicbooks Silver Samurai was a mutant enforcer for the Yakuza while in the movie the Silver Samurai was a Japanese soldier Wolverine saved from the Nagasaki bombing. That soldier would then go on to be the CEO of some technological zaibatsu who built a high tech suit of armor to keep himself alive and also to fight Wolverine and steal his mutant healing factor so he could become immortal.

Mad Moxxi with Nisha from Borderlands. Borderlands has a lot of good characters to cosplay as so I’m surprised I haven’t seen that many Borderlands cosplayers, although with Borderlands 3 coming out soon that might change.

Hiemdall from Thor: Ragnarok after Hela takes over Asgard and he and the other Asgardians have to go underground to avoid them.

Zero from the Megaman X series. I really like how he incorporated lights on his armor rather than just paint them.

A Zazie Beetz Domino from the Ryan Reynolds Deadpool 2 movie.

Dazzler from X-Men wearing the disco-inspired costume from her first appearance in Uncanny X-Men #130.

Another Captain Marvel. I’ve seen a lot of Captain Marvels but this is the first time I’ve seen a Captain Marvel who had the helmet and mask. It’s details like that that really made her stand out to me.

Mobile Infantry soldier and I’m assuming a fleet officer from the 1997 Starship Troopers movie. I actually read the Starship Troopers book a few years ago and I remember it was way way different than the movie. In the book the Mobile Infantry fought the bugs wearing crazy mech suits like from Exosquad, and I heard that was the original plan for the movie but the problem is they didn’t have the budget for it so they just had the Mobile Infantry fight bugs with assault rifles and bulletproof vests. If I remember correctly those suits from the movie would later be reused in Power Rangers Lost Galaxy and Firefly. Judging by the soldiers eyepatch I’m assuming he’s supposed to be the protagonist of Starship Troopers, Johnny Rico since Rico had an eye patch in the CGI sequels, Starship Troopers: Invasion, and Starship Troopers: Traitor of Mars.

I’m closing this out with a pair of bells Belle from Beauty and the Beast and Tinkerbell from Peter Pan. Sorry for the shadows, this was actually the best photo I took of these two, it was just the end of the day and we were in a bad part of the convention center with all these things casting shadows on us.

Looking at this photo I probably could have used the shadows to my advantage and done something a bit more creative with them. Unfortunately, that would have needed me asking these two for more time which I was a bit scared of doing to them because I didn’t want to take up too much of their time. I really need to learn to venture out of my comfort zone. I mean, the worst thing they could have done is said no. Best case scenario is they would have said yes and I would have had an awesome picture to put on social media that I could use to help build my credibility and find more work.

Thanks for checking this out and please don’t forget to come back for more. My next convention is San Diego Comic Con and I am really planning on bringing back a lot of couple stuff from there, but until then I have a crap ton of toys to photograph and movies to watch.
