Looking at LA Comic Con 2018 I don’t think that many people dressed up this. Although I just chalk this up to the numbers at this year’s Con. Like I said in my previous post in all the years I’ve been going to LA Comic Con/Comikaze, 2018 was had to be the busiest I’ve ever seen it.

In the past, there was always a good chunk of attendees at LA Comic Con who would dress up, but with all the extra attendees showing up this year and not enough of them being interested in cosplaying, it just threw off the ratio.

Not having so many more cosplayers is actually a good thing because it’s something I like to call “Cosplay Darwinism” because it really brings out the best work from people. My logic is that if somebody is willing to show up in a costume at a convention then there’s going to be a good chance that they’re going to put some time and effort into their costume and while you will encounter some people whose costumes might not be that great you should still give them some respect for being willing to dress up and also for being willing to invest some time and effort into throwing something together.

In past convention posts I’ve mentioned how I think my eye for photos is really starting to improve. I’ve become much more selective on what I take pictures of versus in the past I would just start snapping pics at whatever. I don’t mean to sound like a snob or anything but it’s just getting repetitive taking photos of people who are all wearing the same exact costume because they all bought the same one from the same place or had the same vision for what their outfit should look like. Honestly, unless you’re doing a cool pose or put a unique spin on your outfit, or  went all out in the details like putting nipples on your Joel Schumacher-era Batsuit or made an Iron Man suit out of actual metal I might just pass on getting your photo.

With this being said I do want to say one of my goals to avoid repetition is not only to find the most well-done costumes but also finding people who choose to cosplay as more unique and obscure characters. I like to say that I pride myself on how I built this site on my pop culture knowledge and finding these people at conventions and being able to identify them really helps my credibility

This post seems a bit more positive than my past rants. I do have a lot more I want to say but considering how many photos I have from LA Comic Con I should save it them for part 2. Until then please enjoy part 1 of my cosplays from LA Comic Con 2018.

I caught this group photo of a bunch of Spiderman posing in the Spiderman display in the Kidrobot booth. They were really cool and accommodating to all the people who were walking in and out and wanting to pose for a picture with them. Sorry for catching that guy in there but honestly I thought it would be easier to get a picture of them with some random person than try to catch them between people when they’ll be shifting positions or doing something else.

I always love it when people do Bob’s Burger cosplays. It’s too bad they didn’t have a Lin. I do like how their Gene had a Sasquatch mask to complete his Beefsquatch ensemble.

Here’s a comicbook version of Domino I ran into in artist alley.

A group of Adventure Time cosplayers. From left to right you have Lumpy Space Princess, Princess Bubblegum, Finn the Human, and Marceline the Vampire Queen.

Here’s a unique twist on Poison Ivy which incorporated elements from Day of the Dead/Dia de Muertos.

A unique twist on Deadpool with the Bob Ross shirt, sombrebro and unicorn. I feel this might have been from a comicbook but I can’t think of which issue it’s from.

A family of Predators. The amount of detail they have in their costumes is really good. I especially like how the little one painted his costume in neon colors to simulate a Predator’s thermovision.

The Angel of Death from Hellboy: The Golden Army. This is probably my favorite costume of this con and I really have to give it up to this woman who wore this. Not only is it super elaborate but I remember it was also really obstructing because when I tried talking to her she had to take off her mask because she couldn’t see or hear anything.

Kat Dennings’ character, Max from that Two Broke Girls show. I tried watching that show and I think I got through the first season and about halfway through the 2nd season before losing interest. It just seemed a bit too repetitive for my taste.

Mia Wallace from Pulp Fiction. I have never actually seen Pulp Fiction all the way through, just bits and pieces here and there as well as a few screen shots from random articles on Cracked. But that’s all I needed because once I I saw the syringe sticking out of her boob I knew right away who she was supposed to be.

Tara Azarian/Tara Cosplay, a professional cosplayer on site as Misty from Pokemon.

Some Jawas from Star Wars. Aside from their costumes these guys also had a speaker or something setup to make Jawa noises as they were walking around the con. The sand on the robs is a good touch, a small somewhat overlooked detail but it really adds to the costume

Snake Eyes from GI Joe.

Another GI Joe ninja that was with Snake Eyes. I think he’s supposed to be Kamakura.

Snake Eyes and Kamakura were part of a group. Pretty good except for the Wolf guy from Foxhound. He just looks too out of place. I’m guessing he’s supposed to be a member of Foxhound from the Metal Gear Universe.

Indiana Jones and Marion Ravenwood from Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Here’s one of the most original costumes I’ve ever seen, it’s a guy dressed as the poster of season 6 of Game of Thrones.

Scooby Doo group cosplay by these guys. I a bit curious if they had a Fred to complete their group.

Here’s a family dressed Chichi, Goku and Gohan from Dragonball Z.

Sakura and Ryu from Street Fighter.

Negan from the Walking Dead TV show. The guy looks pretty legit, like he could be a Jeffrey Dean Morgan impersonator.

Kiki from Hayao Miyazaki’s Kiki’s Delivery Service.

The Red Queen and a gender-swapped Mad Hatter from Alice in Wonderland.

A Cesar Romero Joker from the ’60s Batman TV series. Notice his mustache. This is a reference to the fact that Cesar Romero refused to shave his mustache to be the Joker so the makeup department simply painted over it instead. Although I don’t think the makeup department on the old Batman series ever dyed it green to match his hair.

Erik Killmonger/N’Jadaka and Shuri from Marvel’s Black Panther. These guys really did a good job with their costumes. I really like how Killmonger basically looks exactly how he did in the museum scene from the movie complete with the glasses and dreadlocks.

David Bowie’s Goblin King from Labyrinth.

Here are some contenders for creepiest costumes. The Nun from the movie the Nun which generated quite a stir before it came out due to how creepy the trailers for it were and Regan MacNeil from 1973’s The Exorcist.

Bob Ross Deadpool inspired from one of the trailers for Deadpool 2.

A family of assassins from Assassin’s Creed.

An older Logan/Wolverine from the Old Man Logan series.

Korra and I’m guessing Katara from season 3 of Avatar: The Last Airbender when they were hiding out in the Fire Nation. I like Korra’s little fire ferret plushie.

Found a pair of Waldos.

Queen Hippolyta from the DC Extended Universe.

A pair of Mr. Meeseeks complete with a Meeseeks Box. The coloring on their costumes is too dark of a shade to be accurate but other than that they’re pretty good. They even have that tuft of orange hair that not all Meeseeks had and would have been something I’m sure a lot of people would have overlooked.

Here’s some dual Spidey action by Alicia Marie and Utahime, 2 of the procosplayers at the con. I’ve met Alicia Marie in the past and I’ve mentioned before how super fit she is. In that Spidey suit you can tell she works out. This is the first time I met Utahime but she’s in shape too.

Here’s Amber Arden, another professional cosplayer who was there as Vanellope Von Schweetz. All the stuff in her hair was a good touch.

Lucius Best AKA Frozone from the Incredibles and a slightly tweaked version of Elsa from Frozen. I don’t think these guys coordinated or were even together, it was just a case of right place at the right time.

Alina Masquerade as Elvira, Mistress of the Dark.

Joanie Brosas as Arcana Thrice from The Oracle of Outer Space. Joanie actually voices Arcana Thrice so I’m not sure if you consider this cosplaying or some sort of instance of art imitating life. I remember she announced on Instagram the costumes she would be wearing and I was curious how she was going to pull off the three boobs. She did a good job but I feel the flesh-colored top is cheating a little. Not to sound too pervy but I was expecting her to do something like Total Recall and have a full-on third boob-prosthetic.

Gizmo Duck from Duck Tales and Darkwing Duck. He was always my favorite character when I would watch those cartoons when I was a kid.

A Pennywise from the 2017 version of It. I’m a little surprised I didn’t see that many Pennywises this year but I guess it’s becoming a bit played out right now. I’m sure I’ll see more when It: Chapter 2 comes out.

Here are 2 brothers dressed as Marty McFly from Back to the Future II and Back to the Future III. I’m curious if it’s only a coincidence that Cowboy Marty is wearing white Nikes or if he did it on purpose to add to the authenticity of the costume since that’s what Michael J. Fox had to wear in the movie after the bear ate his boots.

Oogie Boogie and the Pumpkin King version of Jack Skellington from the opening number of Nightmare Before Christmas.

Professor Chaos and Wonder Tweek from the South Park: Fractured But Whole videogame.

Kratos from the God of War series. The scar on his stomach is a good touch.

Rey circa Episode VII: The Force Awakens with a Porg and Amidala from that part in Episode II: Attack of the Clones when they get tossed into that crazy alien gladiator pit and then the Jedis and the Battle Droids show up and it turns into that massive battle. Anyway, I really want to call Amidala “queen” because that’s what she was when she was first introduced way back in like ’98/’99 when the first announced Episode I, but because of the way politics work in the Star Wars Universe or more specifically Naboo, and because in their government their leader is called “queen” even though the title of “queen” is an inherited title instead of a elected title. Seriously? What the hell? Why not just call her President? Or some other weird name for leader cause there’s a shit ton of them.

Here’s a guy dressed as John Lennon from the Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band cover artwork.

Super Saiyan Goku. I really like how this kid made his hair out of what looks like some sort of foam material instead of just cheating and bleaching his hair like I’ve seen so many other DBZ guys do.

What walking around the lobby of the LA Convention Center I caught this Spiderman group fan shot going on. The kid in the Daredevil costume kind of ruins the whole theme but he’s a little kid so cut him some slack. I really like how the little kid in the center is obviously way too young to understand what is going on.

Normally I’m not a fan of group fanshotslike this not because they can be such a clusterfuck attracting so many people making it really hard to get a good shot or angle cause you always have somebody in your way but because of from one year at Wondercon a bunch of Star Wars guys took over the fountains in front of the Anaheim Convention Center for a fanshoot and one of the guys took it upon himself to straight up tell people “if you’re not wearing a Star Wars costume then you need to get out.” I understand they just wanted to use it as a meeting place where they could pose for photos but it was an unofficial shoot. It wasn’t like the Con gave them the time and place for their meet up. It’s a free country dude who are you to just start callin dibs on shit?

I’m going to end this post when these pictures of a guy dressed as Saitama from One-Punch Man. I’m not going to lie I never watched One Punch-Man so I have no idea what it’s about. Also I really fucked up on this photo. I really messed up on the lighting and I really should have turned my camera over and shot landscape instead of portrait but part of me felt that it was still pretty decent catching his pose so I couldn’t just throw it all away.

That’s it for this post. Check back soon for the rest of my cosplayers from Los Angeles Comic Con 2018.
