Here’s a quick post from San Diego Comic Con 2019 I spent quite a while debating if I should spin it off on its own or just leave it as part of the main group. It wasn’t until I realized how many photos I still had from SDCC that I needed to through that I thought I should just spin it off as its own post.
Looking back at SDCC I really feel bad for not paying that much attention at what Mattel brought with them to the show. I should have given them more attention since they are the second largest toy maker in the world and also as a journalist I shouldn’t be so quick to dismiss things so quickly, it was just that there was so much going on and at a glance Mattel just didn’t seem that impressive. Another reason why I didn’t give Mattel too much attention is because I didn’t think they had anything I was into. Some of Mattel’s more famous brands include Fisher-Price, Barbie, Monster High, Mega Bloks, Hot Wheels, and Matchbox—I am not into any of that stuff. I really wish I could expand and diversify the toys I’m into for my site but considering that I’m currently forced to pay for them out of pocket using my limited disposable income and also because I have very little storage and display space I really can’t afford to buy everything that catches my eye.
Hopefully something can work out that will help me be able to diversify my site without putting too much of a dent into my wallet but until then I’ll have to settle for doing highlight posts like this.
This Game of Thrones Mega Construx setup was a huge attraction for Mattel at the Con. I’m a bit surprised that Mega Construx would do Game of Thrones-themed sets since these are supposed to be kids toys and Game of Thrones isn’t for kids considering it’s chock-full of nudity and violence. Although I guess this just to show you how diverse Comic Con has grown as well as how mainstream nerd culture itself has become.
These two sets showing Cersei on the Iron Throne and Daenerys’ dragons are available now.
This set here depicting the Battle of Winterfell between the army of White Walkers and Stark/Targaryen forces however is a prototype and even though it’s currently a few months after SDCC it’s still not in production yet.
The two dragons, Drogon and a white-walkered Viserion battling it out is a good touch. I was wondering if these will be included in the set but since the baby dragons are all sold separately I highly doubt it.
For a kid’s toy the level of detail is amazing. From the dragon fire blasts to the flaming trenches, it’s a pretty amazing recreation of the scene from the TV show. Note the Jon Snow figure on the far right.
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Party Wagon Hot Wheels car. This is the one thing that made me really regret not taking a closer look at the Mattel booth sooner. I really wanted to get one but by the time I discovered them it was my last day at Comic Con and they were already sold out. It reminds me when I was a kid, my dad couldn’t come to the US and live with us until I was 4 and I remember the first toy he bought for me when he was here was the full-sized Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Party Wagon. I think I still have it but when my mom was babysitting some friends’ kids for extra cash she let them play with some of my old toys and they broke it. I really wish I started my site earlier so I could have justified buying the 25th anniversary rerelease when it came out in 2009. I’m really tempted to buy it now but like I said earlier between the fact I don’t have a lot of room around the house and that thing is so fucking expensive right now I can’t see myself being able to justify buying it any time soon.
I really wish I took my time and turned down the F-stop to get a better picture of this. Another lesson about going to conventions I had to learn the hard way. But as you can see here it’s just like in the cartoon where the side door swings out to reveal a laser turret.
Here’s another cool Hot Wheels toy I really wish I got but was also sold out. The Batmobile from the Tim Burton movies. The armored mode is actually just a shell you put over the Batmobile rather than a separate car. While both Batman and Batman Returns had scenes showing the Batmobile deploying its armor both movies used 2 different configurations of armor. The version you see here is the version from the 1989 Batman. Personally, I thought the Batman Returns armored mode looked cooler but I’m assuming Mattel went with this form because it was from the original movie.
I remember seeing this as a kid and I thought it was so cool, although looking at it now as an adult I question what purpose does having this feature on the Batmobile serve. Is it supposed to keep people from tampering or gaining access to the Batmobile?
Also why does the Batmobile need to deploy its shields to drop a bomb?

If the armor is supposed to make the Batmobile tamper proof it’s not really that effective because in Batman Returns Penguin’s goons inexplicably had a remote control which could lower the shields…
Which gave them the access they needed to take the Batmobile apart and install a single device that would let the Penguin take control of the Batmobile. Also the device they installed was installed on the outside—on the bottom of the Batmobile where Batman was able to get to by punching through his floorboard which makes you question the structural strength of the Batmobile itself.
That is a whole lot of head of head-scratching but then this is a superhero movie from the early ’90s so don’t expect too much thought being put into things.
With the She-Ra and the Princesses of Power series currently being on run on Netflix you know Mattel would be pushing that property so they had this statue of She-Ra on site. From what I heard online the redesign of She-Ra was due to people thinking that she was too sexualized in the original series and they wanted to avoid this in the new series and convey messages of body positivity. To me, the current look of She-Ra makes her look too much like animation style Cartoon Network is using for some of their original series.
I’m assuming due to the success of She-Ra and the Princesses of Power Mattel decided to go through with a sequel to He-Man and the Masters of the Universe series titled: Masters of the Universe: Revelation which is set to debut on Netflix sometime in 2020. To promote this they had a statue of He-Man on site holding the Sword of Power.
I couldn’t help but put this clip in here. Anyway, judging by the statue it looks like rather than redesign him like they did with She-Ra they’re just going to make him look a lot like he did in the ’80s which I’m glad they did.
Here’s a few He-Man figures they had on site. They look a lot like the original toys from the ’80s which makes me wonder if they used the original molds from the ’80s. This also reminds me of this thing I heard online on how all the He-Man figures used the same mold, they were just painted differently and given different accessories to make them look different.
Thanks for checking this post out. Sorry it’s so short but I’m still tying to chip away at my San Diego Comic Con content even though it’s been several months later. Like I said earlier I do like to think that this was good learning experience in how I should gather content for my website and that I should really learn not to dismiss things so quickly.
