If you’re like then you saw Avengers: Endgame and came out of it asking what does Marvel have planned next for their Cinematic Universe? Endgame was the culmination of everything that Marvel had built for over a decade across 21 movies and saw the deaths or retirements of most of the characters who built the franchise. Given how the MCU collectively has made about 20 billion dollars and has been met with almost universal acclaim you know that Disney and Marvel wasn’t going to end there. Sure, they already had announcements that sequels to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Black Panther were in the works and they followed Avengers: Endgame up with Spiderman: Far From Home but they didn’t really give any insight into what they had planned next.
It wasn’t until San Diego Comic Con that Disney announced their plans for the future of the MCU which at the time consisted of like 10 movies and television shows before following it up a month later at the D23 Expo with the announcement of even more stuff.
So far it looks like phase four of the MCU will consist of:
- Black Widow
- The Eternals
- Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings
- Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
- Another Spider-Man movie
- Thor: Love and Thunder
- Black Panther II
- Blade film
- Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
- An Ant-Man and the Wasp sequel
- A Captain Marvel sequel
- A Fantastic Four movie
These are just the movies that were announced, for television shows we’re going to have:
- The Falcon and the Winter Soldier
- WandaVision
- Loki
- What If…?
- Hawkeye
- Ms. Marvel
- Moon Knight
- She-Hulk
The first of these upcoming MCU installments is the Black Widow film which is scheduled to be out on May 1, 2020 and while that’s still quite a while away there’s plenty one can do to keep themselves occupied.
For some, you could rewatch all the MCU movies as well as all the TV shows on Disney Plus or if have them on Blu-ray/DVD that should eat up a few weeks. Or you could do what I did and just start surfing the web which is how I stumbled upon this exhibition, The Concept Art of the Marvel Cinematic Universe being held at Gallery Nucleus.
I remember the first time I went to an exhibition featuring concept art, it was the Final Fantasy art show that Gallery Nucleus hosted a way back in like 2017, it was a good change of pace to go to a show that featured concept art from such a beloved franchise rather than see tribute art or art inspired by. I don’t mean to talk bad about shows like that, I mean they’re fun to go to which is why I keep going to them but I just find it really interesting to see original artwork from the very people who created and designed subject, on top of that I’m also a sucker for the pieces that have notes scribbled on them so I can get some insight into what they were thinking when they were fleshing out their designs.
Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to make the opening reception due to scheduling conflicts. I really wish I was able to make it because as part of the opening reception Gallery Nucleus had several key members from the MCU production staff present as special guests including Ryan Meinerding, the Creative Director/VP of Visual Development, Andy Park, Director of Visual Development, and Jackson Sze, Senior Visual Development Artist. At first I was thinking whatever on missing out on meeting this guys especially since I have seen them with booths at conventions where they’re selling some of their artwork although it just occurred to me that I should have tried to meet them because I could have used it as an opportunity to setup an interview with them and hopefully establish a professional relationship with them that would hopefully allow me to expand my site and create opportunities for me in the future.
I’m already late to the game with my website and expanding my site with either an accompanying podcast or a video interview would benefit me greatly since that’s what my competition is doing. Unfortunately, I don’t think I can do it right now since I don’t have the equipment or experience needed to create a podcast or videos of the quality I’m hoping to achieve but it’s something I should really look into.
Until then please enjoy the Concept Art of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, between this and all the other Marvel content floating around this should hopefully get you through until Black Widow comes out.
