Looking back at my cosplayer photos I feel a little disappointed in myself. When I left San Diego Comic Con, I was on the Moon. I’ve been wanting to go to San Diego Comic Con for so many years, and during those years I’ve been getting as much photography practice as I could in so I thought I’d be taking nothing but awesome photos. Unfortunately, when I went through my photos I ended up being forced to throw a lot of them out.
A lot of my photography practice was primarily on learning on how lighting and shadows and learning how to work whatever available lighting I have as well as using appropriate depth of field. Unfortunately I put too much thought into that because I noticed in a lot of my photos I’m still catching people blinking or posing in a way that covered a part of their costume or other people in the photo or I catch them making an awkward face.
I blame my poor pictures on the fact that I was rushing myself. I was so caught up with trying to take in as much of San Diego Comic Con as possible that I never thought that I should take my time with the photos because they’re huge part of the reason I came this. If I’m going to be able to market both my site and myself to other people I need to make sure my photo game is on point otherwise what’s the fucking point?
I got one more convention this year and it’s LA Comic Con. Going in there I’m going to need to tell myself to take my time. I’m also going to need to tell myself that I need cool photos and people who are willing to cosplay at conventions are willing to take cool photos, it’s just a matter of asking them to.
Despite throwing out a lot of photos I still thought I had plenty of usable ones, so enjoy part 2 of my cosplayers of San Diego Comic Con.
Aladdin Cosplayers. You got Aladdin, the Genie, the Magic Carpet, and Abu the Monkey. They did a fairly good job, my only complaint is Genie should have done a better job with his bodypaint.
Two Militia Titan Pilots from Titanfall. I played Titanfall and while the multiplayer was pretty whatever the campaign had a pretty good story to it. I’m really hoping that the developer would make a sequel but considering it’s been a few years I doubt it now.
Pretty good Maleficent. Although and not to sound like too much of a perv, the but the neckline needs to plunge a little more to be more accurate.
Luke Cage as he looks currently in the comics, simple and easy costume to pull off if you’re a big black dude. All you need is a yellow shirt, jeans, silver bracers, and a chain. I wish I noticed this earlier so I could tell him to move the chain but if you look closely you can see he has the Luke Cage belt buckle too.
Iron Man wearing what I’m guessing based on the triangular-shaped ARC reactor the Mark VI armor from Iron Man 2 along with an Extremis-enhanced Pepper Potts from Iron Man 3.
Belle from Beauty and the Beast in the iconic yellow ball gown.
I want say the ninetailed-fox girl is Ahri from League of Legends while the other girl is a modernized take on Storm from the X-Men. It took me a while to figure out what ninetailed-fox girl was supposed to be from. Originally I thought she was a Marvel character but after doing some digging I realized she wasn’t and my OCD got the better of me and after a lot more googling I was able to figure she was Ahri from League of Legends.
This was my favorite cosplay from SDCC: Peter the non-powered guy that Deadpool recruits for his X-Force team in Deadpool 2. I like how he made sure to include the goggles and parachute as well as doing the X-Force pose.
Barbie and some Toy Soldiers from Toy Story. I like how the soldiers had the commitment to paint their faces green to complete the look.
Sub-Zero from Mortal Kombat. Really good detail on the costume. My only complaint is I wish he figured out how to get his ice orb to light up.
Jessica Rabbit from Who Framed Roger Rabbit. This is probably one of the most iconic cosplays that somebody can do.
The late Randy “Machoman” Savage. I really wish this guy had Slim Jims with him to add to the costume. Also I really wish I didn’t watch that episode of Dark Side of the Ring that was about him and his relationship with his wife, Miss Elizabeth because that completely fucked up my perception of him.
Tifa from Final Fantasy VII. I like to give her props for suggesting to use this somewhat abandoned corridor for her background because it looked a lot like Midgar.
It was pretty appropriate I caught this She-Ra and Xena together. I mean Xena was basically the She-Ra of her time since the Xena character did empower and inspire girls everywhere just as She-Ra did.
Taskmaster, one of the lesser-known Marvel villains. I remember seeing him as a supporting character in that Agent X miniseries from a few years back and I thought he was pretty funny in that. I’m really curious how he’ll be portrayed in the upcoming Black Widow film.
Ryu and a rule 63 Link. When I ran into these two I was wearing a Ryu from Street Fighter shirt that I got from Uniqlo which is why I was so eager to get pics of them.
Jason Mamoa Aquaman complete with the trident, or is it called a pentadent because it has five spikes?
I asked this woman what her costume was from and she said it was an original thing she threw together.
Two Handmaidens from the Handmaid’s Tale.
Imperial TIE Fighter pilot. As I explained in part 1 of my overall San Diego Comic Con post while both the Imperial and First Order Tie pilots look very similar with helmets that are based off of Storm Trooper helmets, the big give away that differentiates them is the air hoses. Imperial Pilots have 2 air hoses while First Order pilots only have one.
A Captain America complete with the shield. The weathering on the costume was a good touch.
Max Da Costa from Neill Blomkamp’s Elysium. I wish he was willing to shave his head to complete the look but he did do an amazing job on the exoskeleton.
Rule 63 Pennywise the Clown. With It: Chapter 2 coming out this year I was a bit surprised I didn’t see that many It-themed costumes like I did in 2017 when the first movie came out.
Here’s a first for me, Princess Leia and Han Solo from The Force Awakens.
Two Captain America’s, a Black Widow, and Scarlet Witch I found in the lobby. I really regret not getting this picture from the other side so I wasn’t fighting the sun shining through the window.
An alien from the Alien series. I kind of wish they did a better job on the body like adding more detail to the legs and torso. The skull in the mask I’m thinking is supposed to be a callback to Alien: Resurrection with the alien/human hybrid thing. That movie in my opinion was probably the creepiest in the series.
Nurse Joy and Brock from Pokemon.
While walking to the Indigo Ballroom to check out a panel I saw these wrestler cosplayers hanging out on a bench. We got Golddust, Mankind, and I think the Undertaker. Unfortunately, I’m not quite sure who the woman is supposed to be.
Lilith and Maya, the Sirens from Borderlands 1 and 2. Borderlands is a really good series so I’m a little surprised I don’t see more cosplayers from it. I’ve seen a few on social media and I’ve seen a few here and there at conventions but compared to like League of Legends, or Overwatch cosplayers I don’t see a lot of Borderlands characters.
Merida from Brave and I think an Elsa from Frozen.
Captain Malcolm Reynolds and Kaylee Frye from Firefly/Serenity. This reminds me how I bumped into a friend of mine from college who’s a big Nathan Fillion fan and she was telling me how much she fangirling when she was able to meet him at a special panel they were doing.
This is a really good Yuffie Kisaragi from Final Fantasy VII. This girl got all the details down.
Kiki from Hayao Miyazaki’s Kiki’s Delivery Service. Looking back, I just realized I didn’t see a lot of Miyazaki-based cosplayers.
A really good Snow White. The use of a corset was a good touch and I feel gave her a more grown up look.
Doug Funnie and Patti Mayonaise from Nickelodeon’s Doug. I’m wondering if Nickelodeon would consider rebooting it. Or maybe Disney will do it since I think they still own the rights to Doug.
Daenerys Targaryen from season 1 of Game of Thrones.
Kakashi Hatake from Naruto. Really good touch with the colored contact lens. A subtle detail that I’m really glad I captured.
Here’s a girl I met who is on Instagram as @panda_sharbear as Princess Kitana from Mortal Kombat.
Team Rocket from Pokemon.
An inflatable T-Rex. I am really surprised I didn’t see more of these at SDCC. I see so many videos of people doing stupid shit while wearing these online, you would think there would be huge groups of people wearing these and doing funny stuff.
Ace Ventura Pet Detective. I tried watching Ace Ventura on Netflix a while back and I feel bad for saying this but I don’t think it’s aged well. Watching it by today’s standard it just doesn’t seem funny. I remember Jim Carrey was so funny in the ’90s but his characters seem like such assholes now.
Another Daenerys Targaryen from season 1 of Game of Thrones but this one from the season finale, “Fire and Blood” when Daenerys burned herself on Khal Drogo’s funeral pyre.
Albus Dumbledore and Professor Minerva McGonagall from the Harry Potter series.
The White Spy and Black Spy from the Spy vs. Spy comic strip from Mad Magazine/TV.
Mysterio. Judging by the belt and collar this version is heavily inspired by the ’90s Spider-Man cartoon version. Aside from the Spider-Man: Far From Home version the ’90s cartoon version is probably the best looking. The comicbook version and the ’60s Spider-Man cartoon versions looks so dumb and wimpy.
@unlucky_criminal wearing his Black Spider-Man costume on a random electrical box in the Gas Lamp District. If you’ve seen my posts from previous conventions you’ll know that I always see this guy posing either on a trash can in the convention center or in some random place outside. Considering how hard it is to get into SDCC I wonder if he actually had a pass to get in or did he just go down to San Diego to sit on things and pose for photos.
I think it was really appropriate that after getting out of the Infinity Train panel I caught these Infinity Train cosplayers outside.
A Carrie from the Stephen King movie of the same name.
Here’s Deadpool along with a comicbook version of Domino wearing the costume she wore when she joined X-Force.
When I met Deadpool and Domino a guy was trying to get them to recreate an old Deadpool cover with a friend of his which is why I got this picture of them doing this. I really wish I could remember what issue they were trying to recreate.
A Spartan from Halo. I’m a bit surprised they went with silver instead of the military green the Master Chief is so known for.
Some Attack on Titan cosplayers. I remember going to Anime Expo with an old roommate of mine back in 2014 and I was seeing Attack On Titan cosplayers everywhere over there, now they’re pretty rare on conventions which is surprising considering how popular that series is.
Cobra Commander as he looked in the 1983 GI Joe: A Real American Hero series made by Sunbow. Honestly I never really liked this version of Cobra Commander because I always thought the silver face mask looked dumb. I always preferred the version from season 2 of the DIC cartoon who wore the cloth mask.
Closing this post out with a Mom of Mom’s Friendly Robot Company from Futurama. This is a first for me. It would have been really cool like if the cartoon she could open the suit and reveal her wearing a slimmed down unitard.
Thanks for checking this out and don’t forget to come back for more.
