After taking another look at my photos from the C2E2 2019 I just realized that a lot of people in Chicago are into professional wrestling. I’ve seen people cosplay as professional wrestlers at other conventions but C2E2 had a strong number of people dressed as professional wrestlers.
With all the pro wrestler cosplayers I found especially surprising that there were multiple Hulk Hogans. I know in his prime Hogan was basically the poster boy for pro wrestling. The man was in a Rocky movie not to mention he was pretty much everywhere in the ’80s and ’90s so I can understand where the popularity came from but the guy hit a rough patch in recent years. He had a sex tape that got leaked that led to a very public and very unflattering lawsuit against Gawker Media. On top of that part of that sex tape had audio of him using the N-word which resulted in the WWE/WWF removing almost all references of the Hogan from their properties as well as a lot of his merchandise getting pulled from store shelves. Hogan did eventually make his return back to the WWE so I guess if they could forgive him then the fans can too.
Anyway, looking back at my photos I’m really proud of myself for focusing on cosplayers who either do a really good job with their costumes or dress up as more obscure or least popular characters. There are a lot of blogs out there and while many of them can give you pictures how many of them can give detailed backstories and expositions on the characters they’re photographing?
I think I’ve ranted enough here so enjoy part 2 of the cosplayers of the 2019 Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo.
A Detective Pikachu. I like the deerstalker hat and inverness cape (I had to look those up to figure out what they’re called), it really makes him look like Sherlock Holmes. I only wish the inflatable Pikachu costume he wore had usable fingers so he could hold a magnifying glass in his hands.
A Judge Dredd. Based on the detail of his costume it looks like he was aiming more at looking like the comicbook version of Dredd from 2000 AD rather than the Stallone or Karl Urban versions from the movies.
Hank McCoy AKA the Beast from X-Men. I like how he added blue-colored long finger nails for his claws, but I wish he painted his skin blue instead of wearing gloves. Although, I’m guessing the reason he went with gloves instead of paint is because he didn’t want to worry about it washing off or having to repaint his hands every time he washed them after going to the bathroom or eating something.
A Kate Kane Batwoman. I hate to be nitpicky but it’s really bugging me that she’s only wearing gauntlets and full gloves.
Henchman 21 AKA Gary Fisher and Henchman 24. Venture Bros. was another show I never really got into but after seeing these guys’ picture pop up in my folder and also that woman from part 1 dressed as Dr. Mrs. The Monarch I’m thinking I should give it a try.
Watching these guys walk around with all the LED lights on their costumes made them really hypnotic, like moths to a flame–or bugs to a bug zapper. These guys are dressed up as original characters from some independent movie they wrote and directed. I really wish I could remember what it was but I lost the card they gave me.
A Johnny Depp Willy Wonka from Tim Burton’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The cane is a good touch, if you look closely you can see the cane is plastic and filled with candy. At first I thought she got a curtain rod or something to use as a cane but after taking a closer look and googling Johnny Depp Willy Wonka I can see that she got the cane exactly on.
Penguin and Catwoman from 1993’s Batman Returns. The Penguin is spot on but Catwoman needs a little work. I figure she’s supposed to be Catwoman towards the end when her suit is all torn and jacked up after fighting Batman and getting thrown into a rooftop greenhouse, but she needs to look more torn up and ragged to pull that look off.
I’m not sure if this woman is supposed to be a female version of Doctor Octopus or Lady Octopus AKA Carolyn Trainer. Props to her on her robot octopus arms. Judging by the color I’m wondering if they glow in the dark.
Here’s a guy dressed as Earmouse AKA the Vacanti mouse, the laboratory mouse who had an ear-shaped cartilage structure grown on his back. This mouse would become the inspiration for the South Park episode “Eek, A Penis!” where Mr/Mrs. Garrison decides to undo his/her sex change and they grow a new penis for him/her on the back of a mouse. This is probably one of the most random costumes I’ve ever seen at a convention.
Here’s a family dressed as the cast of Scooby Doo. My dad thought it was a bit random they had their extra kid dressed as some random Skeleton. I don’t know why they didn’t make him Scooby Doo unless they couldn’t find a Scooby costume in his size. They could have at least made him Scrappy Doo. Fred carrying around the monster masks was a good touch.
Chef from South Park.
Paul Bearer from the WWE/WWF. I feel really stupid that I didn’t realize that his wrestling stage name is a pun on the term pallbearer until I was in like my mid-twenties.
Princess Boo AKA Booette/Boolette. I’m really surprised how popular Princess Boo and other genderbent Mario monsters have become and so quickly. Especially considering they’re non-canonical. This stuff started out as fan art inspired by the Super Crown Mechanic from New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe for the Nintendo Switch. For those who are in the dark and will need to research the Super Crown Mechanic like I did, the Super Crown Mechanic is just something that transforms Toadette into Peachette a form that looks like Princess Peach. Like I said, it’s really surprising that the origin of Booette started off as some fan art some guys did. Although what’s even more surprising is the whole Super Crown Mechanic didn’t even appear until the Nintendo Direct presentation in September 2018.
John Wick wearing the infinity Gauntlet. Not sure why the guy felt he needed the Infinity Gauntlet. Between the scars and facial hair, he looks legit as John Wick.
Thor circa Thor: Ragnarok and what I think is the Old Man Logan version of Wolverine.
Not sure if you would consider this guy a cosplayer. He was just a random dude in a catsuit who was helping one of the vendors sell their books.
Generic fighter from Street Fighter. I wish I backed up a little to get him all in frame so you could see this but props to this guy to be committed enough to walk around barefoot.
Some Captain America cosplayers. You have two Peggy Carters circa First Avenger and a female Captain America who judging by the costume I’d say is from Winter Soldier.
A Cobra Kai martial artist. With William Zabka and Ralph Macchio as some of the celebrity guests at C2E2 it was expected to bump into a couple Cobra Kai guys.
A DC Comics Scarecrow. I really like how the guy included a fear gas weapon into his costume. I asked him what he used for the chemicals and he said it was just paint and water.
This kid as Hannibal Lector complete with the dolly was probably my favorite cosplayer from all of C2E2.
The Question, one of the more lesser-known DC superheroes. Now that I think of it I’m pretty sure this is the first time I ever met somebody cosplaying as Question.
A Joker and Harley Quinn. Joker and Harley have been done to death so usually I don’t bat an eye on people who cosplay as them unless they do a unique take on them or do a really good job pulling them off. In this case I thought they did a really good job. The Joker here really reminded me of the Joker from the Kingdom Come miniseries.
The Coon and Mysterion from South Park.
Here’s a really good Iron Man and a Black Widow I found while looking for a restroom. The guy’s Iron Man was pretty legit since he had a hands free mechanism to work the face plate on the helmet.
Here’s a guy dressed as a member of the Warriors from the 1979 movie of the same name. I never actually saw The Warriors. I really regret not catching it on Hulu or Netflix when I had the chance. Hopefully it’ll pop back up someday.
The Sanderson Sisters from 1993’s Hocus Pocus.
Master Roshi AKA the Turtle Hermit from Dragonball Z.
Rose Quartz from Steven Universe. Unfortunately, I can’t think who the other girl is supposed to be.
Here is Joanie Brosas wearing her Vampirella outfit. Joanie was one of only two professional cosplayers who had their own table at C2E2. The other was Vera Bambi. I tried to get a picture of Vera but unfortunately the line was too long because she was wearing her Woody from Toy Story outfit with assless chaps. It’s also because of that outfit that I decided not to get a ninja picture of her for fear of looking all pervy.
Present and future versions of Static from the Static Shock comics.
A Baymax from Disney’s Big Hero 6 I know this is basically a store-bought costume but I really like how he sprung for the costume that comes with the emoji indicators on the chest.
Bayek, the Egyptian Assassin from Assassin’s Creed: Origins. The shield and khopesh were really good touches.
Two version of Hulk Hogan. On the right we have the Hulkamania-era Hulk in the familiar red and yellow and the one on the left dressed in the black and white the Hulkster was rocking while a member of the NWO. The championship belt with NWO spraypainted on it is a good touch.
The Wasp and Ant-Man from Ant-Man and the Wasp. The suits are good but I wish Wasp’s wings were bigger.
Here’s a really good Harley Quinn. Her vinyl suit really made everything pop for her. After taking the photo I asked if she was hot in that suit and while she said she wasn’t hot she did say the vinyl was uncomfortable to move around in.
I believe this guy is supposed to be Mr. Satan from Dragon Ball Z, I’m not quite sure. I thought he was supposed to be somebody else but I can’t recall off the top of my head who he’s supposed to be.
The Blob from the ’90s X-Men cartoon.
A Goku/Spider-Man mashup.
Aragorn and Arwen from the Peter Jackson Lord of the Rings trilogy.
A Jason Mamoa-era Aquaman with his Queen Meras.
A Sith Lord, Slave Princess Leia and Rey. I really thought I was out of Star Wars cosplayers then I found this picture.
Bill Cipher from Gravity Falls. I really need to sit down and just binge watch that series. I saw like the first two episode and I really liked them, I just hope I can find the time to watch the rest of it.
Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield from Resident Evil 2.
I’m not sure what these two girls are supposed to be. I thought I did but I can’t remember and it’s really bugging me.
Here’s a girl dressed up as Mick Foley’s Mankind character. I told her she was missing Socko but she responded by telling me she had a a sock for Socko in her bag. I probably should have asked her I she could pull it out but I didn’t want to be a demanding dick.
Another Pyramid Head from Silent Hill. Not to be mean but I don’t think this one is as good as that previous one I talked about, he’s just missing too many details.
Another Doctor Octopus, this one based on the Alfred Molina Doc Ock from Spider-Man 2 with Tobey Maguire. This guy did a really good job on the detail on his tentacles, they look just like the ones from the movie.
Here are some guys dressed as Jaegers from Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim. From what I saw these guys are from a club who build their own Pacific Rim Jaeger suits.
I really should have tried to get a photo of these guys by themselves but they were getting mobbed so I decided to just settle on a ninja pic while they were being interviewed.
Muriel and Eustace Bagge from Courage the Cowardly Dog.
Vanya Hargreeves from Umbrella Academy. Her contacts make her look freaky as hell. This is another show I’m interested to watch but can never find the time to.
I’m going to close out this post with this gentlemen dressed as Idris Elba’s Heimdall from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Complete with the armor and sword he had in Thor and Thor: Ragnarok.
Thanks for checking this out and please comeback soon. I still have one more post coming devoted to the cosplayers of the 2019 Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo.
