This Kid Robot Break Man was something I picked up at San Diego Comic Con 2015.
For those who don’t know me that well or haven’t read through some of my previous posts, going to San Diego Comic Con has been a long time dream of mine but due to my negligence in previous years and Comic Con International’s purchase process I have not been able to buy tickets. Luckily in 2015 I was able to win tickets off the radio and was able to go that year.
Since I won two tickets I ended up giving a coworker my spare ticket while I also brought my parents with me so they could wander around downtown San Diego while my coworker and I enjoyed the Con.
I always remember after me and my coworker went inside Comic Con we were probably inside for maybe 5 or 10 minutes when I got a call from my dad. He just wanted to tell me that he saw some people walking around outside of the Convention Center with some Kid Robot shopping bags and since he knew I was into collecting Kid Robot figurines I should go check out their booth to see if they had anything I would want.
The funny thing is when he called me I was literally standing in front of the Kid Robot booth, but I had to tell him that at the time the lines to buy merchandise were pretty long and I was unsure about wasting valuable con time just waiting in lines to buy stuff.
Fast forward to about 3 or 4 hours later when all the collectors and other vultures had had their chance grabbing up San Diego Comic Con exclusive swag and I see there’s no line for the Kid Robot booth so I decide to go over there and check out what they have.
Considering how the trip to San Diego Comic Con was super last minute (I literally got the tickets the day before) I didn’t have the chance to hit up the bank to get some spending money and because at the time I was being a responsible adult I felt I shouldn’t use any of my credit cards or hit up an ATM so I just limited my purchases at the Kid Robot booth to two items: a special edition Dunny (which I’ll be showcasing in a future post) and Break Man from the Mega Man series.
Looking back I regret not buying the Mega Man figurine that they were also selling but part of the reason I didn’t want the Mega Man figure was because he was orange and traditionally Mega Man is blue.
If you’re into the Mega Man mythos then you should know that Break Man is Proto Man’s alterego and Proto Man’s backstory is that he was the first robot created by Dr. Light, predating both Mega Man and Roll. After his creation it was revealed that there was a serious design flaw in Proto Man’s energy core. Dr. Light planned to correct the flaw in Proto Man’s energy core but Proto Man’s programming made him afraid of undergoing the repair process so he ran away. Knowing that without the modifications Proto Man would soon perish, Dr. Light assumed that Proto Man died and began work on Mega Man and Roll
Instead of dying however, Proto Man was found by Dr. Wily who corrected the flaw in his energy core and modified Proto Man for combat.
Being in Wily’s debt, Proto Man helped him with his schemes, facing Mega Man on multiple occasions in Mega Man 3 as Break Man. Proto Man would later save Mega Man from being destroyed at the end of Mega Man 3 before turning entirely against Wily in Mega Man 4.
This origin is completely different from Proto Man’s origin in the Ruby-Spears Mega Man cartoon from the ’90s. In the cartoon, Proto Man was built using plans that Dr. Wily stole from Dr. Light. Proto Man would then go on to serve as Wily’s second in command and Mega Man’s rival facing him on multiple occasions without the Break Man identity.
Here’s one of the fights with Break Man from Mega Man 3. It’s not that much of a hard fight considering how simple Break Man’s attack pattern is.
If I remember correctly this Break Man and the Orange Mega Man were the start of a huge new line from Kid Robot which included blind boxes, key chains as well as two more larger figures which came out a few months after San Diego Comic Con: a Proto Man and a second Mega Man figure colored in his traditional blue.
I managed to pick up about 75% of the blind boxes as well as ended up with several duplicates which led me to stop trying to put together a complete set. As for the larger Proto Man and Mega Man figures I never wanted.
If you’re wondering why I don’t want the larger figures it’s because their flesh painted faces freak me out. I chalk this up to watching Child’s Play when I was a kid and being traumatized by Chucky. The funny thing is this fear really only applies to dolls and figures with flesh coloring. Other toys that don’t have any human resemblance like Transformers or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles don’t freak me out.
Here’s the box for Break Man.
Front side shows his front.
Back side of the box shows his back.
If you google Kid Robot Proto Man you’ll see that this is pretty much the same as the Break Man box except that it’s red instead of white.
Here’s the actual Break Man figure. Notice his right hand ends in a Mega (Proto?) Buster as well as the full face mask that he wears to hide his identity. According to the Mega Man Wiki Proto Man’s Break Man form was the inspiration for Wily’s Sniper Joe robots who have a similar face and also carry a shield. Even though Break Man carries the shield in the game he doesn’t’ actually use it. I mean you can shoot at him as much as you want and you don’t’ have to worry about him blocking any of your shots.
Here’s a side shot with a better shot of the shield. I’m not sure if this intentional or not but the eye slit in the shield is in the wrong location. It should be at the top and not the bottom. Although after doing some googling I did find some artwork of Proto Man holding the shield up with his fist pointed upwards which put the eye slit up to his face so I guess it sort of makes sense.
Here’s Proto Man’s backside. Here you can clearly see Proto Man’s scarf although due to the way it’s molded to his body it looks more like a ponytail than it does a scarf. I’m a little disappointed that Kid Robot didn’t make the scarf a separate piece or at least try to emphasize it more.
This is basically it for my Proto Man write up. Sorry there’s not that many photos but this Proto Man doesn’t really have that many cool details that are worth shooting. I wish I was able to find a way to make my pictures more exciting but this is all I could come up with. I guess I could go outside and find some cool place I could use for the background and scene but honestly I’m a little reluctant to bring these outside somewhere for fear of losing or damaging them and also trying to complicate the photoshoot would make things go longer and given how things are going for me and the site right now the last thing I need is more delays.
Anyway thanks for reading.
